Studies in sow reproduction. 2. The effect of lactation length on the subsequent reproductive performance of the sow

Abstract: Forty litters were weaned from their Landrace x Landrace x Large White dams at 2-day intervals to give a range of lactation lengths from 4 to 42 days. A significant (P<0-001) negative curvilinear relationship was observed between lactation length and the interval from weaning to first oestrus. This period was increased by 4-2 days with the reduction of lactation from 42 to 4 days. The relationship between lactation length and the interval from farrowing to remating was significant (P<0-001) and positively line… Show more

“…A large degree of variation in the weaning to oestrus interval in a herd results in reduced productivity because good conception rates require good service management which is not possible when service procedures interfere with other stock tasks. The variation in the weaning to oestrus interval is increased as duration of lactation is shortened (Self & Grummer, 1958 ;Smidt, Scheven & Steinbach, 1965;van der Heyde, 1972;Cole, Varley & Hughes, 1975). Exogenous hormone therapy as a means of inducing oestrus during lactation has had limited success and has often involved a series of injections which is both time consuming and impractical (Cole & Hughes, 1946 ;Heitman & Cole, 1956; Crighton, 1970;Guthrie, Pursel & Frobish, 1978).…”

“…Sows weaned from their litters following lactation lengths of less than 3 weeks are characterized by an increased interval from weaning to the next oestrus and by a reduction in litter size at the next farrowing (Smidt, Scheven and Steinbach, 1965;Aumaitre and Rettagliati, 1972;te Brake, 1972;Cole, Varley and Hughes, 1975;Varley and Cole, 1976).…”
