The purpose of this work is to introduce the notion of synthesizing mass-exchange networks (MEN's). A systematic, two-stage, procedure is proposed for the synthesis of cost-effective MEN's. In the first stage, a thermodynamically-oriented procedure is used to identify the thermodynamic bottlenecks (pinch points) that limit the extent of mass exchange between the rich and the lean process streams. Preliminary networks, that feature maximum mass exchange, are generated at this stage. The objective of the second stage is to improve the design of these preliminary networks so as to develop a final configuration of the MEN that satisfies the assigned exchange duty at minimum venture cost. This approach is applied t o the synthesis of MEN's with singlecomponent targets as well as multicomponent, compatible targets. An illustrative example on the sweetening of coke-oven gas is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed synthesis procedure.

Automated synthesis of distillation sequences using fuzzy logic and simulation

An automated distillation sequencing system (DSEQSYS) is presented, which consists of three components: a controlprogram, a fuzzy heuristicsynthesis program, and a process simulator. DSEQS YS, when applied to problems previously reported in the literature, overcomes some of the disadvantages of using heuristics or mathematical programming alone. DSEQSYS can address problems involving nonsharp separations, nonideal chemical behauior, and conflicting heuristics. A simple approach for converting the traditional separation heuristics into corresponding fuzzy heuristics is also demonstrated.

This paper addresses the application of Genetic Programming (GP) to the synthesis of multicomponent product nonsharp distillation sequences. Combined with the domain knowledge of chemical engineering, some evolutionary factors are improved, and a set of special encoding method and solving strategy is proposed to deal with this kind of problem. The system structural variable is optimized by GP and the continuous variable is optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm simultaneously. Because GP has an automatic searching function, the optimal solution can be found including distillation, splitting, blending and bypassing operations automatically without any superstructures of nonsharp distillation sequences. Three illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the effective computational strategies.
