In light of the magnitude of the AIDS epidemic, schools are addressing the issues of school attendance of HIV-infected children and the delivery of AIDS education programs. Special educators may become increasingly involved in the education of students with HIV and AIDS, and the delivery of AIDS education programs to students with disabilities. Special educators (teachers; speech-language clinicians; and preschool, early childhood, and at-risk personnel) were surveyed as to their knowledge of documented and nondocumented modes of HIV transmission. The findings suggest that special educators have limited knowledge of verified and nonverified modes of HIV transmission. Implications for preservice and inservice training programs are discussed.

Contemporary early childhood teachers are facing new challenges as children who test HIV positive or who have AIDS enter the classroom. Providing appropriate health care and educational programs for these children is a major concern of teachers. This article presents a brief discussion of guidelines and issues that might be addressed in an in-service for teachers in general education to prepare them for a student with HIV or AIDS in their classrooms.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act includes school health services in a list of possible related services. The rising costs associated with education and the request for more extensive and costly services by children who have special health care needs have made the delivery of these services in schools as part of free, appropriate public education increasingly controversial. An examination of relevant documents and court decisions from the past 10 years provides insight into congressional intent, federal regulations, and local implementation of service delivery related to children with extensive health care needs.
