Students' Views of Instructional Practices: Implications for Inclusion

Abstract: This study examined middle- and high-school students' perceptions of teacher adaptations to meet the special learning needs of students in the general education classroom. Individual interviews were conducted with 95 middle- and high-school students who represented the following groups: low achievers, average achievers, high achievers, learning disabilities, and English as a second language. “…A chunk of discourse is defined as a sentence, paragraph, or larger segment of discourse that provides evidence of a particular category or theme. After coding samples of data sets using the defined categories, the two researchers conferred to compare responses, further revise, and resolve differences in coding (Vaughn, Schumm, Klingner, & Saumell, 1995). Two independent researchers who were experienced in developing coding systems reviewed the final coding scheme.…”

“…Teachers often are not knowledgeable about disabling conditions and the instructional modifications required to accommodate learners with disabilities. According to Vaughn et al (1996), teachers who are concerned with class size, inadequate resources, and lack of training also have the most reservations about the success of inclusion. Teachers are found to be willing to implement inclusive practices if they are given adequate time for preparation and training for instructional skills (Gal et al, 2010).…”

“…Three researchers independently extrapolated themes from the transcripts of interviews (Strauss & Corbin, 1990) and subsequently met in a group to compare themes, resolve disagreements, and develop a common set of revised themes (Vaughn, Schumm, Klingner, & Saumell, 1995). With the final set of themes, two researchers separately coded participants' responses and then came together to discuss their codes.…”
