“…In the North American context, Blackall et al (2007) reported two new elements of professionalism: enrichment and equity, in addition to the six domains of ABIM. Nevertheless, when Tsai et al (2007) attempted to validate ABIM domains to the Taiwanese context, eight new domains emerged: commitment to care, righteous and rule-binding, pursuing quality patient care, habit of practice, interpersonal relationship, patient-oriented issues, self-development and respect for others. It appears that the 'difference' is greater when the context shares an 'eastern culture' than a 'western' culture.…”

“…Previous attempts to measure professionalism had categorised professionals on the basis of pre-defined criteria (Howell and Dorfman 1986;Mathieu and Hamel 1989), validated indicators of professionalism (Hall 1968;Hayward-Farmer and Stuart 1990;Swailes 2003) or assessed attitudes towards professionalism (Jha et al 2006;Blackall et al 2007;Tsai et al 2007) Five key elements of professionalism According to Furlong et al (2000), knowledge, autonomy and responsibility are the most widely accepted criteria of professional work. By and large, these criteria also emerged from the survey, along with two others.…”

“…According to the Royal College of Physicians (Royal College of Physicians 2005) 'Medical Professionalism signifies a set of values, behaviors and relationships that underpin that trust the public has in doctors'. The literature emphasizes that there is no agreement on the exact definition of medical professionalism (ABIM 2001) or even what constitutes it (Tsai et al 2007), and that it may be culturally defined by the context in which it is generated and practiced. There are more than one hundred definitions of medical professionalism (Tsai et al 2007).…”

There are more than one hundred definitions of medical professionalism (Tsai et al 2007). Such diversity in the definition of the concept can be traced back to the different types, and the nature of the professional organizations from which they originated (Inui 2003).…”
