Students’ Attitudes Towards Science: The Contribution of a Citizen Science Project for Monitoring Coastal Water Quality and (Micro)plastics

Abstract: The promotion of positive attitudes towards science is an important goal of science education. This research aimed to identify students' attitudes towards science and whether their participation within a citizen science project has contributed to positive attitudinal changes. So, an attitudinal scale was developed, validated, and applied (as a pre and post-test) to 574 students aged between 12 and 14 years old. Positive attitudes towards science were recorded from the outset among children of both groups. Stud… Show more

“…Threats to the global environment, the lack of human motivation to care for the environment, technological advances and, in general, the diverse reports that show the problem of environmental reality, are factors that generate concern for the search for action strategies that enable the preservation of life and the conservation of the planet, as they warn about the global significance of recognizing the various elements of the environment that influence the evolutionary process of the human being (Aguirre et al 2023). In this sense Araújo et al (2023) ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS: A CURRENT CHALLENGE FOR PERUVIAN EDUCATION warns that these damages to the planet that directly threaten life have a categorical impact on Peru, since it is necessary to take political and state measures to reduce pollution to preserve the lives of Peruvians; It is necessary to generate spaces that enable the recognition of reality and its forms of protection, of the environment, promoting and motivating reflection and the development of pro-environmental consciences, which allow us to "save" our planet. In the opinion of Arciniega et al (2023) a positive turn must be taken in terms of people's environmental awareness, for the transformation of pro-environmental thinking schemes because if the current destructive trends are not changed, the man-nature relationship will continue to deteriorate, for this reason in Guadalupe and in La Libertad, with concern, mentions the existence of irrational exploitation of natural resources and excessive environmental pollution, with serious damage to the ecological balance, which is why developing adequate environmental awareness in students is important.…”

“…As such, it is important to develop projects that promote environmental education among young people and which focus on assessing the impact of these approaches not only on the cognitive domain (e.g. Araújo et al, 2021), but also on the affective domain as it was intended to be done with the development of PVC – Perceiving the Value of Chemistry behind water and microplastics , an educational citizen science project as described below in more detail.…”

“…According to Lu et al (2016) study, results of correlation and structural equation modeling show some of the associations and potential relationships between the motivational and emotional factors studied and students' attitudes and intentions towards studying science, which would increase their likelihood of future involvement in a scientific career. In addition, on the affinity dimension, positive attitudinal changes were achieved about perceived self-efficacy and appreciation of science and science classes (Araújo et al, 2021). Attitudes toward chemistry are a set of beliefs students develop about chemistry or chemistry course (Salta and Tzougraki, 2004).…”
