Students' Anti-Intellectual Attitudes and Adjustment to College

Abstract: Correlations between scores on the Student Anti-intellectualism Scale and scores on the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire were examined for a sample of 84 college students. Significant negative correlations were found between students' anti-intellectual attitudes and their Full Scale, Academic Adjustment, and Institutional Attachment scores but no correlation between anti-intellectual attitudes and the Social Adjustment and Personal-emotional Adjustment scores.

Such students were at higher risk for poor academic adjustment, including underachievement and attrition.…”

“…The authors presented evidence of survey validity by showing correlation with similar constructs, such as dogmatism, and openness to ideas and a lack of correlation with social desirability. The scale was also used by Hook (2004) in his study regarding adjustment to college.…”

“…In the manual, created in 1989 and revised in 1999, the authors state that the SACQ can be used for research purposes or as a diagnostic tool to identify students with poor adjustment to college. The extent to which the SACQ is used as a diagnostic tool is unknown, but there has been an increase in the number of authors using the SACQ for research purposes, especially during the past 5 years (e.g., Hook, 2004;Meehan & Negy, 2003). Because of its widespread use and the implications involved with its use, it is necessary to continue providing validity evidence for the SACQ scores.…”

“…3 Other researchers have found that anti-intellectualism is related to adjustment to college, academic self-efficacy, GPA, year in university, and perceptions of cheating. Hook (2004) reported a negative correlation between students' anti-intellectualism and their adjustment to college. Elias (2008) investigated the relationship between anti-intellectualism and academic self-efficacy among 666 business students.…”
