Students’ Affective Belief as the Component in Mathematical Disposition

Abstract: This research evaluated the extent of students' affective beliefs towards mathematics at Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), Sogod, Southern Leyte, Philippines as the basis for a Mathematical Disposition Intervention Plan. The study employed descriptive research as the investigation centers on the extent of the students' affective beliefs towards mathematics using a random sampling and Slovin's formula in the determination of the respondents. The quantitative data were treated using frequency, simple perce… Show more

“…The results of the study also show that mathematical disposition has a positive effect on critical thinking skills (Lin & ChunTai, 2016;Minarti et al, 2020). The results of the study show that beliefs have a significant effect on students' abilities (Almerino et al, 2019). There is a significant relationship between mathematical disposition and learning achievement (Lin & ChunTai, 2016).…”

“…One of the main causes is students' attitude to give up when solving high-level mathematical problems, which require a high understanding and take rather long to solve. Therefore, students believe that the subject of Mathematics is boring, and this makes them give up easily (Almerino et al, 2019). This situation not only occurs while answering high-level mathematics questions, but students also feel tensed to answer questions that require mastery of mathematical comprehension, and they give up easily on answering mathematics questions because they are weak in the subject.…”

“…On the contrary, a negative disposition towards mathematics will inhibit the improvement of their learning achievement (Feldhaus, 2014). Disposition is very necessary to support students' confidence in facing problems with high thinking, develop good habits and have a positive view of mathematics (Almerino et al, 2019;Facione et al, 2015).…”
