Student Perception of Teacher and Parent Involvement in Homework and Student Engagement: The Mediating Role of Motivation

Abstract: Currently, there is much debate about the value of assigning homework. Organizations such as the OECD have concluded that doing more homework is not synonymous with better performance. This study was designed to analyze the mediating role of student motivation in the relationship between the involvement of parents and teachers in homework and the engagement of students in these tasks. Seven hundred and thirty students in Compulsory Secondary Education (7th–10th grade) participated from 14 schools in the north … Show more

“…In an interaction surrounding homework, for example, a parent engaging in autonomy support might ask for their child's input, try to understand their child's perspective on approaches for solving the homework assignment, and encourage their child to work in their own way. In general, autonomy-supportive parental involvement has been demonstrated to increase children's positive emotions [29], intrinsic homework motivation [30], and academic achievement [31,32]. Drawing from the literature on teachers, autonomy-supportive practices have been demonstrated to both directly (e.g., [33]) and indirectly (e.g., [34]) lead to higher math achievement in students.…”

“…Confusion Matrix accuracy index generated by the parents' checklist (95% , Table 6) was higher than the index generated by the teachers' checklist (85% , Table 4). As it is the case in other countries, (Núñez et al, 2019), in Brazil public policies recommend pedagogical practices adopt the use of homework in all levels of education (Resende et al, 2018). Homework has two basic forms: a) activities related to the educational curriculum for fixation of learning skills through exercises and reading practice; b) educational activities that involve parents and other family members to enrich the curriculum with everyday activities.…”

Obe dimenziji starševske vpletenosti v izobraževanje mladostnika torej igrata pomembno vlogo, a pogosto z različnimi izidi mladostnika (Amado et al 2015;Anderson et al 2003;.…”
