Student Patterns of Financing Education at a Land‐Grant University

Abstract

A financial aid survey was administered to the entire student body (10,185) at a land-grant university. The data showed that parental assistance was the main source of financial support, but that it declined in importance each year, while student employment by the university increased each year. Legislation providing increased opportunities for student employment appears to be appropriate and desirable. A wide variety of individual solutions to financial planning were noted. N E W CHALLENGES facing college and university administrators of financial aid programs include large increases in student population, rising educational costs, and expanding programs of federal support. Harris (1959) has projected a rise in the cost of tuition of 125 per cent for private institutions and 233 per cent for public institutions during the 1960-1970 decade. Moon (1964) foresees a national family dollar deficit of over three billion dollars for higher education by 1970.
