The complexity of foreign language learning and its restricted time to learn in the classroom need proactive efforts from the English students outside the classroom with full initiative and effort. This study tended to investigate to what extent students’ autonomous learning activities outside the classroom to master English (four English skills). This study applied a descriptive quantitative design. It was conducted at a state university in Majene, West Sulawesi, Indonesia in the academic year 2021/2022. The population was English education students in the second and third years. There were 62 students who participated in this research. They were selected by using a convenience sampling technique. To gain the data, this research employed a questionnaire as a research instrument which consists of 16 items of statements. The data, then, were analyzed by employing descriptive statistics. Based on the data analysis, it was found that students’ autonomous learning activities outside the classroom are still limited to activities that are entertaining for them. Apart from that, it has not been found that their extra efforts are done independently to become more proficient in every English skill. This indicates that students are still passive learners. By knowing the independent learning efforts carried out by students out of the classroom, English lecturers are expected to be able to design policies or teaching strategies to guide students so that they can increase their efforts by optimizing the wealth of available independent learning resources.

One of the targets of graduates from educational institutions or schools is student independence. Especially for special schools, student independence is a necessity. Many factors can encourage student independence, including implementing life skills education policies and managing extracurricular vocational education. This research aims to analyze the magnitude of the impact of implementing life skills education policies and managing extracurricular vocational education on student independence. The method used in this research is a survey method with a quantitative approach, as well as correlational and regression techniques. Data collection techniques were through questionnaires with a Likert scale for 47 respondents. The results of data analysis show that first, there is a positive and significant influence of the implementation of life skills education policies on student independence. Second, there is a positive and considerable influence of extracurricular management of vocational education on student independence. Third, there is a positive and significant implementation of life skills education policies and the direction of extracurricular vocational education on student independence. To increase the effectiveness of managing extracurricular vocational education, it is recommended that school principals provide challenges with the hope that teachers will become more enthusiastic about working on extracurricular vocational education because there are exciting things to achieve. If the management of extracurricular programs is excellent, they will be included in achievement events, or their work will be patented.

The spark of online learning implementation in nowadays education partly appears to be one of the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic. School from home through various platforms, applications, and other technological devices replaces face-to-face real classroom learning activities. However, even if some people can locate online learning or courses as both convenient and accessible, it brings challenges and requires readiness in some aspects, including students’ competence in working independently. Roper (2007) and Sumbawati et.al (2020) probe that students' independence plays an important role through the system of online learning as it helps students to achieve good learning goals and outcomes. The present research, therefore, is interested in examining students’ perception of their own independence in online EFL learning. It involved 152 students of a public Senior High School in Kalimantan. This research applied a survey technique, and the data are both quantitative and qualitative analyzed. The instrument used in this research comprises a set of questionnaires adapted from Marfu’ah (2020), Sumarmo (2013), and Sam et al. (2012) embracing 8 indicators of independent learning which are subsequently elaborated in 32 statements. Those eight indicators encompass 1) student learning initiative; 2) diagnosing learning needs; 3) setting learning targets; 4) viewing difficulties as challenges; 5) utilizing and finding other relevant sources; 6) choosing and implementing learning strategies; 7) evaluating the learning outcome process; 8) owning self-efficacy. The research result shows that the student's perception of their own independent learning is positive. It implies that they perceive themselves to be autonomous during the conduct of their online learning, particularly in the aforementioned eight areas. Through this study, students are expected to be more motivated, independent, confident, and be able to explore further their abilities to achieve independence in learning. Furthermore, this study will hopefully make teachers aware of the importance of encouraging the students to be more independent and responsible for their own learning.
