Student-Generated Questions in Literacy Education and Assessment

Abstract: This study investigated the extent to which students’ questioning ability is associated with their literacy abilities, attitudes, perceived text understanding, and interest in the text they read. “…This finding supports the results of a study by Taboada & Guthrie (2006) who also found that high or low question levels are associated with reading comprehension levels. Meanwhile, the quality of student questions can be determined by the ability in reading comprehension (Maplethorpe et al, 2022). The results of this study also strengthen the opinion that student questions can provide useful information for instructors about students' understanding levels (Chin, 2004).…”

“…This finding perhaps indicates a connection between understanding educational content and the level of questions that can be asked about it. This assumption is supported by the claim in the literature that asking questions by students reflects their level of understanding the subject being studied (Bergey et al, 2022;Chin & Brown, 2002;Chin & Osborne, 2008;Maplethorpe et al, 2022;Song et al., 2017;Su & Chen, 2018;Touissi et al, 2021;Yu et al, 2013Yu et al, , 2015Yu & Liu, 2008).…”

“…According to (Lois et al, 2022), In addition, students were given reading and writing comprehension tests as well as questionnaires indicating their perception of literacy, perceived understanding of the text, and interest in the text. According to hierarchical regression analysis, the quality of questions students produced was predicted by their ability to read, positive attitudes toward writing, and their level of understanding of the text, with significant correlations with text genre.…”

“…These findings suggest that language educators consider awareness of teacher assessment in their teacher education programs. In another journal, (Lois et al, 2022) said that students also completed reading and writing comprehension tests, as well as questionnaires about their attitudes towards literacy, perceived understanding of the text, and interest in the text. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the quality of questions students produced was predicted by reading comprehension ability, positive attitudes toward writing, and level of perceived understanding of the text, with solid effects related to text genre.…”
