Student Experience, Satisfaction and Commitment in Blended Learning: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic led to higher education institutions adopting alternative teaching models to continue their work while complying with health measures. Specifically, in Spain, once the lockdown period was over, universities adopted the blended learning (BL) model, which allowed for a partial return to the classroom. The BL model meant a completely new approach for students that impacted their learning experience. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), this paper explores in-depth students’ experience … Show more

“…Compared to traditional classroom instruction, students' learning experiences in BL contexts are enriched by combining F2F, web-based, and mobile learning. As summarized by Batista and Gavilan [41] , the principal characteristics of BL experiences involve presence, self-learning, distance, and ubiquity. Accordingly, our measurement of students' learning experiences in this study focused on how they perceived the BL-based course, including the learning mode, online resources, overall LMS-based learning, interaction with their instructor and peers, and learning outcomes.…”

“…Thus, through the partial mediation of students' learning experience, teacher support can fully affect students' behavioral engagement in BL environments. Indeed, when learners feel supported by teachers, they report greater satisfaction with the curriculum [41] . Their self-efficacy will be enhanced [32] , and their internal and external motivation will increase [70] , directly leading to increased academic satisfaction [71] .…”

“…At present, research mainly focuses on online learning regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, while the research on satisfaction in blended learning environments is relatively small. The different dimensions of blended learning have a positive contribution to student satisfaction [12]. The comparative analysis of blended learning and complete online learning shows that there is a significant difference in the impact of perceived usefulness on usage intention [13].…”

“…Blended courses provided even more opportunities for students to communicate and interact during the pandemic, thereby increasing their cognitive-affective experience with the course ( Bouilheres et al, 2020 ; Asghar et al, 2021 ). This experience encouraged discussion and critical thinking, translating into increased learning satisfaction ( Al Awamleh, 2020 ; Batista-Toledo and Gavilan, 2023 ). It appears that regardless of the teaching environment, there is an inextricable connection between course experience and learning satisfaction.…”
