Student achievement goals and psychosomatic health complaints among Swedish adolescents: the role of sex

Abstract: Aim School related determinants (e.g. student motivation and goals) may be important for student achievement as well as their mental health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the links between two goal orientations (mastery and performance) and psychosomatic health problems by investigating the general patterns as well as the patterns for specific classifications of students, in particular by investigating the potential statistical interaction effects by gender. “…Medical students’ performance-avoidance goals were positively correlated with academic stress and negatively related to learning adaptability, sleep quality, and subjective well-being. These results were inconsistent with a previous study on adolescents in public middle schools in China ( Tian et al, 2017 ), but were similarly to the findings of a previous study on students in compulsory school and upper-secondary school in Swedish ( Bergh and Giota, 2020 ). The reasons for these discrepancies may be the differences in cultural backgrounds and research objects.…”

“…The average value in the age group of children and adolescents was 25.4%, which was significantly lower than in our study (40.1%). The results of the overall frequency of occurrence of RSL obtained by us were lower than those of researchers from some other countries (e.g., Britain -66% [17], Italy -65.9% [18]), but higher than in Sweden (16.6%) [19] and Turkey (30.5%) [20]. Data on the prevalence of FSD in the pediatric adolescent population of the Russian Federation are scarce [30].…”

“…FSD are currently an urgent problem in pediatrics, poorly covered in domestic pediatric practice. Research is carried out in different countries [3,5,10,12], climatic and geographical regions [13,14,15,16], socioeconomic conditions and places of residence (urban/rural), as well as among different age-sex groups and different contingents (hospital patients, organized children's groups) [17,18,19,20].…”

“…The research by Bostwick et al (2020) acknowledges that while cognitive factors like standardized test scores and high school GPA explain a portion of the variance in academic performance, non-cognitive factors could account for the remaining unexplained variance. These non-cognitive factors, including students' intrinsic beliefs and perseverance, can influence the approaches and strategies they implement in academic tasks and outcomes, such as achievement goals and GPA (Bergh & Giota, 2022;Yi et al, 2021).…”
