Studenoe-2 and the origins of microblade technologies in the Transbaikal, Siberia

Abstract: Analysis and dating of new Upper Palaeolithic sites suggest that microblades emerged in the Transbaikal after 18,000 years ago. These findings encourage review of earlier assertions that such technologies developed in northeast Asia prior to the last glacial maximum.

“…Other late Upper Paleolithic sites in the Transbaikal associated with microblade industries include Kosaia Shivera (Konstantinov, 1994) and Oshurkovo (Konstantinov, 1994). Together, these sites demonstrate that Studenoe is part of a late Upper Paleolithic microblade-producing complex that emerged in the Transbaikal after the peak of the last glacial maximum (Goebel, 1999;Goebel et al, 2000).…”

“…Goebel et al (2000) prefer the charcoal ages from these deposits to the bone age, because the charcoal samples have smaller standard deviations and they came from indisputable hearth features. Further, the radiocarbon ages from unit II appear to be stratigraphically out of order.…”

“…This was followed by similar research carried out in several other regions across northeast Asia (e.g., Kuznetsov, 1996;Goebel et al, 2000;Goebel, Waters, & Dikova, 2003;Buvit et al, 2003;Buvit, 2008). Results have been used for discussing the adaptive dispersal of modern humans throughout the area (Buvit et al, 2003;Goebel, Waters, & Dikova, 2003), while at the same time demonstrating the difficulties in establishing regional chronologies (Kuznetsov, 1996).…”
