Structuring and Composability Issues in Petri Nets Modeling

Abstract: Along Petri nets' history, numerous approaches have been proposed that try to manage model size through the introduction of structuring mechanisms allowing hierarchical representations and model composability. This paper proposes a classification system for Petri nets' structuring mechanisms and discusses each one of them. These include node fusion, node vectors, high-level nets, and object-oriented inspired Petri nets extensions, among others. One running example is used emphasizing the application of the pre… Show more

“…Composition and structuring in Petri nets are a prominent research issue, mainly owing to the fact that Petri net models tend to become very complex, in terms of number of elements and their connections, even for simple modeling tasks [22]. There are two approaches to Petri net composition, i.e., fusion and folding [7,22]. The former aims at simplifying models by allowing the interconnection of several Petri nets, similarly to the concepts of module linking and class composition in programming languages.…”

“…PNs constitute a mathematical metamodel that can be animated/simulated, formally analyzed, and for which several implementation techniques are available. The designer can choose, among several PN meta-models, a specific one intentionally created to deal with the particularities of the system under consideration, like the ones referred in [4,7,15,16]. In the last years, research in scenario-based modeling is receiving a considerable attention.…”

“…A closely related concept to composition is the one of open Petri nets which has been used in different contexts like the analysis of web services [25]. Numerous compositional approaches have been proposed for the modelling of complex applications but most of them are based on high-level Petri nets; see [11] for a detailed survey.…”
