Structuring a new product development process portfolio using decoupling thinking

Abstract: The purpose is to develop a structured new product development (NPD) process portfolio for manufacturing companies that facilitates the organization of NPD processes for both standardized products, focusing on time-to-market, and customized products, focusing on time-to-customer. The research combines different literature streams, enriching and advancing the understanding of decoupling thinking in NPD processes of manufacturing companies. “…Likewise, studies engaging with dairy production, distribution, and retailing functions to understand their motivations, barriers, and procedures regarding design, implementation, and evaluation of well-being messaging [e.g., (54)], despite being more challenging than convenience sampling or collecting on-the-pack information, are vital to sender-related research. Employing lessons learnt from organisation research on other topics such as new product development (52,55,56) or food packaging (57) can be helpful.…”

“…There is also a more normative body of project management work where the results can be very readily applied by practitioners although there is still academic utility in these works (Gluck and Foster, 1975;APM, 2015;APM and PwC, 2019). Within the product development literature, the work of Wheelwright and Clark (1992) although relatively mature is still frequently utilised as a conceptual framework within the literature (Beauregard et al, 2016;Tiedemann et al, 2019;Kavadias and Ulrich, 2020). Equally, from the more practitioner-focussed domain, the work of Gluck and Foster (1975) is also prominent within the literature (Johnson et al, 2009;Brattstrom et al, 2018;Johnson and Filippini, 2013).…”
