Structured Wii protocol for rehabilitation of shoulder impingement syndrome: A pilot study

Abstract: Objective: To determine the feasibility and efficacy of using a structured Nintendo Wii protocol to improve range of motion, strength, and quality of life in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. Methods: A total of 14 patients with shoulder pain were randomized to perform a structured Wii protocol (n = 8) or conventional therapy (n = 6). Pain-free shoulder range of motion, strength, shoulder pain and disability, and quality of life were assessed pre- and post-treatment. Results: All 8 patients comp… Show more

“…All 56 articles describe HETs that can help patients with musculoskeletal shoulder disorders when exercising at home ( Table 1 ). Of these, 18 articles refer to a specific target group for their use [ 20 , 23 , 26 , 36 , 37 , 45 , 47 - 50 , 52 , 54 , 58 , 62 , 68 , 71 , 73 , 77 ]. In 11 articles, the HET is recommended for several target groups [ 19 , 30 , 31 , 42 , 53 , 55 , 60 , 75 , 76 , 81 , 83 ].…”

“…Of the 27 application systems, 24 were based on self-developed software products. Only 3 made use of commercial games, namely Wii Sports [ 39 , 40 ]; EyeToy: Play, Dance Dance Revolution; and Taiko Drum Master [ 24 ]. While commercial games do not require any investments for development, in contrast to in-house developed games, they are not specially adapted to the target group.…”

“…However, it is unclear to what extent these results are transferable to the population owing to small sample sizes [ 29 , 52 ], healthy people as users [ 29 , 36 , 48 , 52 ], or informal testing [ 22 ]. The remaining application systems simply suppose an increase in motivation (9 of the 27)—motivating effects were usually deduced from single subjective questions [ 36 - 38 , 42 ] or directly assumed without any evidence as a result of the game design elements used [ 24 , 30 , 40 , 41 , 45 ]. The same applied to adherence analyzes; 3 publications presume an increase was caused by the game design elements that had been implemented, although there was no evidence given [ 29 , 30 , 40 ].…”

“…An important consideration in selecting games for rehabilitation is to examine if the games encourage or discourage the use of unwanted compensatory strategies. Structured gaming that uses available games but in a step-by-step guided manner may be one solution to using existing gaming consoles, such as the Wii [92]. Furthermore, rehabilitation games are now being designed to provide specific feedback regarding desirable and undesirable movements and forces through the use of sensors embedded in real-world objects [93] and instrumented clothing [94].…”
