This study is an empirical examination of the commonly held argument that physical disability produces alienation from society. Levels of subjectively measured alienation were compared between a sample of unimpaired individuals and a sample of severely impaired workers' compensation recipients in the United States. Based on background characteristics and regression equation predictions, the findings indicate that five years after a severe work-related injury, the workers' compensation recipients were no more alienated than might be expected if they were not impaired. The implications of these contradictory findings raise important theoretical and substantive issues.
