Structured Raney Nickel Catalysts for Liquid‐Phase Hydrogenation

Abstract: Structured catalysts consisting of metal sheets on which Raney Ni was deposited by the thermal spraying method were tested for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol and 2-nitrotoluene to 2-methylaniline, used as model reactions. Catalytic tests performed in a bench-scale (1 L) reactor have shown that catalytic activity of Raney Ni sheets is significantly higher than the one of the pellets used for fixed-bed applications but lower than the activity of the powder catalyst used in slurry mode. The… Show more

“…Besides RANEY s nickel is used in a large number of industrial processes mainly focused on hydrogenation. 149,150 Furthermore, particularly remarkable is the recent development of nickel based homogeneous or organo-nickel chemistry. 151 p-Aminophenol is an important intermediate in the preparation of several analgesic and antipyretic drugs.…”

“…However, the use of structured or cellular Raney‐type alloys is not very common to date. Only simple geometries such as diffusion‐coated wire meshes or plasma spray‐coated monolith structures have been achieved so far …”

“…[2] One way to overcome the limited heat transfer capacity of classical fixed bed reactors is to use a catalyst support with solid connections of significant cross-section in the form of an open cellular metal foam [3] or simple monolithic structures. [4,5] Significant effort has been put into the understanding of the wall heat transfer coefficient [6,7] optimizing the thermal design of such structures. Because reproducing stochastic foams is only possible to a fairly limited degree, [8,9] current efforts are mainly undertaken to develop metallic periodic open cell structures (POCS) for chemical reactors fabricated via the selective electron beam melting process (SEBM).…”
