Structured multimedia authoring

Abstract: We present the user interface to the CMIF authoring environment for constructing and playing multimedia presentations. The CMIF authoring environment supports a rich hypermedia document model allowing structure-based composition of multimedia presentations and the specification of synchronization constraints between constituent media items. An author constructs a multimedia presentation in terms of its structure and additional synchronization constraints, from which the CMIF player derives the precise timing i… Show more

“…In the literature, several tools for media authoring have been proposed, see for a detailed review [16]. In general, the authoring tools for media annotation range from professional tools to broadcast annotations with videos for Video on Demand (VOD) distribution, to web TV such as 4oD (Channel 4's download service), BBC i-player, Sky+.…”

“…For instance, the definition of a multimedia document specification given in [14] restricts content production to structured documents to enable automated high-level transformations: "A multimedia document specification s={O,C} is made of a set of multimedia objects O and a set of constraints C between these objects". In this paper, we do not necessarily rely on such structured documents as defined in [7]. Instead, we propose adaptable authoring techniques that also take into account advanced multimedia scenes (such as SVG [1], BIFS [11] or Flash 1 ) where the spatial, temporal and interactive properties of a presentation are essential and allow content creators to carefully design their presentations.…”
