Structured Interview for Assessing Perceptual Anomalies (SIAPA)

Abstract: Clinical descriptions of perceptual and attentional anomalies in schizophrenia emphasize phenomena such as flooding, or inundation, by sensory stimuli. A failure of sensory "gating" mechanisms in the brain is hypothesized to account for these symptoms, and this hypothesis has led to a marked interest in their putative psychophysiological substrates. However, there are no systematic analyses of the phenomenology of these perceptual experiences, nor has the hypothesized connection between the clinical phenomena … Show more

“…We measured sensory filtering disruptions using a modified (auditory) version of the SGI [Kisley et al, 2004], a selfreport measure that can be divided into four subscales: Perceptual Modulation, Distractibility, Overinclusion, and Stress-Fatigue Vulnerability. It is based on the interview measure validated in clinical populations [Structured Interview for Assessing Perceptual Anomalies (SIAPA); Bunney et al, 1999]. The SGI has been found to correlate with reduced P50 suppression [Kisley et al, 2004], providing a link between selfreport and psychophysiological measurements of sensory filtering disruptions.…”

“…Perceptual disturbances other than hallucinations were registered with the Structured Interview for Assessing Perceptual Anomalies (SIAPA). This instrument covers 15 items (scores 1–5) and ascertains especially the frequencies of hypersensitivity and inundation by and selective attention to auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory stimuli during the week preceding the interview [24]. …”

“…Symptom rating scales were designed to assess general somatic and psychological symptoms and level of consciousness (modified from Norris, 1971;Bond and Lader, 1974;Bunney et al, 1999), and were identical to those described in Swerdlow et al (2000aSwerdlow et al ( , 2002b. Ratings were treated as continuous variables and were analyzed with mixed-design ANOVAs.…”
