Structured Data Acquisition in Oncology

Abstract: Background: Demographic changes and improvement in therapy have shifted the focus of treatment towards chronic diseases and multiple health conditions. This has caused a tremendous increase in data per patient that needs to be integrated longitudinally and across departmental silos. The general increase in the volume of data per diagnostic examination and the number of diagnostic procedures per diagnostic pathway additionally accentuate this data integration challenge. Summary: Subspecialization in medicine ha… Show more

“…Healthcare professionals are challenged with increasing complexity of interdisciplinary care and rising amounts of patient data. In order to ensure the quality of care, the integration of data from multiple sources is needed (4). In this study, we present a new software to provide comprehensive patient information and support physicians in evaluation of patients' health conditions.…”

“…These technological gaps between departments prohibits clinicians from building a comprehensive understanding of the patient's individual condition. In daily clinical practice, clinicians spend a substantial amount of time collecting, integrating, and assessing patient data in order to care for their patients (4).…”

“…In patient care, multiple clinical departments acquire a variety of data which are stored in various formats and IT systems. Summarizing and presenting all of this information in a consistent and easily retrievable manner are a key component to gain a holistic understanding of the patient’s health status and facilitates communication between treating physicians [2].…”

“…Synoptic reporting based on data elements enables the reuse of information for multiple purposes. Information can be presented according to requirements of the respective recipient, like the referring physician, multidisciplinary team (MDTs) meetings, or clinical research [2]. In this study, we developed a novel system to align synoptic reporting to the data integration requirements and compared it with the current standard.…”

“…Although the shift from paper to digital goes beyond availability and acquisition speed, the real improvement lies in the implementation of "unstructured-to-structured" data transformation. For data that is to be used in subsequent analyses, efficient mapping to computationally useable formats is essential [7]. While structured reporting alone may suffer from loss of "verbatim" information, it allows for an automated interpretation of meaning, enabling automated analyses otherwise not possible [8].…”
