Structure-Viscosity Relationship of Low-silica Calcium Aluminosilicate Melts

Abstract: The structure-viscosity relationship of the low-silica (SiO2 ≤ 10 wt%) calcium aluminosilicate melts, which represent the secondary refining ladle slag systems, was investigated by employing the rotatingcylinder viscosity measurement in conjunction with the Raman spectroscopy measurement for linking the macroscopic thermophysical property and molecular (ionic) structural information. Furthermore, the influence of CaF2 on the structure-property relationship was explored. The viscosity of low-silica calcium alum… Show more

“…The oxide subsystem CaO-Al2O3 also has a deep eutectic at 1362ºC with 53.0 mol% Al2O3 and 47.0 mol% CaO [46]- [49]. Thermodynamics modeling and experimental results have shown that at low Al2O3 concentration (below eutectic), the Al atoms are tetrahedrally coordinated [47]- [50]. As shown in Figure 41, the AlO4 units can form a fully densified network when there is no non-bridging oxygen (NBO).…”

“…The application of Raman spectroscopy can disclosure the vibration units of molten slag, which can be interpreted the structure of silicate melts (amorphous glass phase). Kim reported a mathematical correlation between the peak area of Raman peak and the external physical properties, including density and viscosity [4]. However, the role of Al 2 O 3 was not well studied, which is necessary to utilize the Raman spectrum on the SiO 2 -CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 based slag (blast furnace slag) to investigate the silicate structure units.…”

“…In the present study, altogether 11 models were collected and evaluated using experimental data. The model features and its equations were summarized in Table 2 4 . η = 1 + 0.5 (1 − ) 4 Krieger-Dougherty Probstein [176] A polydisperse suspension with a particle size distribution from submicrometer to hundreds of micrometers is simulated and treated as bimodal.…”
