Structure‐terahertz property relationship in sodium borosilicate glasses

Abstract: We report, for the first time, an early evidence of structure‐terahertz (THz) property relationship for two tie‐lines within the sodium borosilicate glass system. The NaBSi series was chosen to study the effect of the substitution of silicon dioxide for boron oxide, whereas the BNaSi series studies the substitution of silicon dioxide for sodium oxide. Nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared absorption, and Raman spectroscopies were used to determine structural changes across both series. THz time‐domain spectrosc… Show more

“…Borosilicate, tellurite, and chalcogenide glasses were produced, with compositions shown in Table 1, and discussed in detail elsewhere [22][23][24] . Structural studies have been carried out to provide a comprehensive description of each glass systems structure through Raman spectroscopy, and additional spectroscopies, seen in previous work [22][23][24] .…”

“…Borosilicate, tellurite, and chalcogenide glasses were produced, with compositions shown in Table 1, and discussed in detail elsewhere [22][23][24] . Structural studies have been carried out to provide a comprehensive description of each glass systems structure through Raman spectroscopy, and additional spectroscopies, seen in previous work [22][23][24] . The sodium borosilicate glass system was selected within the borosilicate glass family, ultimately studying two tie line, NaBSi and BNaSi, series, studying the replacement of SiO 2 for B 2 O 3 with constant Na 2 O at 20 mol% and SiO 2 for Na 2 O with constant B 2 O 3 at 20 mol%, respectively.…”

“…We have recently reviewed and provided early insight on structure-THz property relationship for borosilicate, tellurite, and chalcogenide glass families. 2,16,17 The borosilicate and chalcogenide glass systems studies have been extended to discuss the visible-THz refractive index correlation and long-wave infrared-THz refractive index correlation and the effect of femtosecond laser irradiation, respectively. 17,18 THz-TDS has been used to study optical properties of various glass families with select compositions and its application in glass science as a nondestructive characterization technique.…”

“…A more detailed discussion of borosilicate glass structure and network, along with indepth description of THz spectroscopy and data analysis, is reported elsewhere. 2 We have obtained structural information across each compositional series using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared absorption, and Raman spectroscopies. We have used the THz-TDS to determine the refractive index within the THz regime, with a focus on the refractive index at 0.502 THz.…”
