Structure of the zooplankton communities in macrophytes stand of a Neotropical floodplain (the Paraná River, Brazil)

Abstract: This study evaluated the structure of the invertebrate community in plankton of the littoral region of three backwaters of the Upper Paraná River floodplain close to macrophyte stands during different hydrological periods. Samplings were conducted using vertical hauls with a plankton net (68 μm). A total of 81 rotifer taxa and 78 microcrustacean taxa were identified. Both rotifer and microcrustaceans presented higher richness and abundance during the high water period. On the other hand, the highest species di… Show more

“…The abundance and richness of rotifers floodplain lakes are dependent on the presence or absence of aquatic macrophytes (Duggan et al 2001, Kuczynska-Kippen and Nagengast 2006, Colares et al 2013. Usually, there are fewer taxa in the pelagic zone without macrophytes, and more taxa when macrophytes are present, with around 20% of the taxa being exclusive to regions that have aquatic macrophytes.…”

“…On the other hand, in lakes, where variation in the number of species was higher, population fluctuations may occur according to the hydrological period. In general, in the drought periods, there is a high concentration of individuals, and in the flood, a higher dilution (Simões et al, 2013).…”

“…habits (Allan, 1976) that characterize their ecologic niches both in central and littoral regions of the aquatic environments (Monakov, 2006;Colares et al, 2013). Zooplankton is also considered as an important link in the aquatic food chain, participating in various trophic relations (Auer et al, 2004).…”

“…Studies on aquatic environments overgrown by macrophytes have focused mainly on taxonomic aspects, emphasizing plants themselves, periphyton and fishes (Casatti et al, 2003;Bini et al, 2005;Taniguchi et al, 2005). Several researches on freshwater zooplankton community have been conducted in Brazil, but despite its great ecological importance, little attention has been given to the zooplankton studies in vereda ecosystems, only became more significant from 2000 (Lima et al, 2003Peixoto et al, 2008;Pinese et al, 2008;Lansac-Tôha et al, 2009, Colares et al, 2013.…”
