ABSTRACT. The integuments of ten treefrog species of two genera from Scinaxnae -O. angrensis (Lutz, 1973), O. flavoguttata (Lutz & Lutz, 1939), O. humilis (Lutz & Lutz, 1954), O. perpusilla (Lutz & Lutz, 1939), O. v-signata (Lutz, 1968, Scinax hayii (Barbour, 1909), S. similis (Cochran, 1952), O. trapicheroi (Lutz & Lutz, 1954) and S. x-signatus (Spix, 1824) -were investigated using conventional and histochemical techniques of light microscopy, and polarized light microscopy. All integuments showed the basic structure of the anuran integument. Moreover, the secretory portions of exocrine glands, such as serous merocrine and apocrine glands, were found to be restricted to the spongious dermis. Lipid content occurred together with the heterogeneous secretory material of the glands with an apocrine secretion mechanism. In addition, clusters of these apocrine glands were present in the ventrolateral integument of some species. Melanophores were also visualized in all examined hylids. However, the occurrence of iridophores, detected through polarized light microscopy, varied according to the species. The Eberth-Katschenko layer occurred in the dorsal integument from both genera, but it was only present in the ventral integument of O. albicans, O. angrensis, O. flavoguttata, O. perpusilla and O. v-signata. Although the integument of all treefrogs showed the same basic structure, some characteristics were genus-specific; however, these features alone may not be used to distinguish both genera.

In this study, for the first time, the morphology of the dorsal and ventral skin of Triturus karelinii using light microscopy through histochemical methods was described. The skin exhibited basic morphological characteristics of the other urodeles: the epidermis composed of keratinized stratified epithelium with numerous conical protrusions and the dermis subdivided into spongy and compact layers. In the spongious dermis, three distinct types of glands were observed, namely serous, mucous and mixed glands. These glands were alveolar and occurred in both males and females. The morphologies of all three skin glands differed from anurans and other urodeles, having peculiar characteristics. Serous glands exhibited three different appearances. An unusual finding in mucous glands was the different appearance of their granules, showing diverse density after staining with PAS and AB. The histochemical analysis clearly demonstrated the presence of neutral, acid and sulfated mucins in the adenocytes of mucous glands. Mixed glands formed by mucous and serous glands exhibited the same morphological traits of both types of glands. Light microscopic observations revealed that the dorsal and ventral skin showed structural similarities with some minor differences, possibly resulting from their functions.

Many anuran species are characterized by sexually dimorphic skin glands. These glands often are concentrated on specific areas, such as the mental region, flanks, or the nuptial pads. We studied the histology and histochemistry of mental and lateral glands in Hypsiboas punctatus, and compared them to skin from other body regions. We describe four types of dermal glands, two types of mucous and two types of serous glands. The mucous glands are formed by a single layered epithelium. The mucocytes surrounding a central lumen are filled with polyhedral granules. Ordinary mucous glands are small sized glands with cubical epithelium, mucoid content, and small granules. Specialized mucous glands are characterized by a larger size, a columnar epithelium, a proteinaceous content and larger granules. Both types of serous glands are syncytial and share some structural features including size, shape, and morphology of secretory granules. However, ordinary and specialized serous glands differ in their histochemical properties, size and appearance of secretory granules, and glandular outlets. The specialized type of mucous glands in H. punctatus resembles most SDSGs described in anurans, whereas the presence of specialized serous glands that are sexually dimorphic is less common. Both specialized glands occur only in mental and lateral regions of males, whereas ordinary mucous and ordinary serous glands occur in males and females.
