STRUCTURE OF MUKAADIAL, A MOLLUSCICIDE FROM THE WARBURGIA PLANTS

Abstract: The structure of a new sesquiterpene dialdehyde, mukaadial, isolated from Warburgia stuhlmannii and W. ugandensis and possessing molluscicidal property, has been established by means of spectroscopic and chemical data.

“…Warburganal has shown effective molluscicidal activity . Warburgia stuhlmannii and W. ugandensis demonstrated molluscicidal activity (Kubo et al, 1983), making them potential in the control of schistosomiasis. Drimane sesquiterpenoids are known to have molluscicidal activity Fukuyama et al, 1982;Taniguchi & Kubo, 1993).…”

“…Warburgia salutaris, W. stuhlmannii and W. ugandensis have yielded a series of drimane sesquiterpenoids such as isopolygodial, muzigadial, polygodial, salutarisolide, ugandensidial and warburganal (Brooks & Draffan, 1969;Jansen & de Groot, 1991;Kioy et al, 1990;Kubo et al, , 1983Manguro et al, 2003;Mashimbye et al, 1999a;Rabe & van Staden, 2000;Wube et al, 2005;Xu et al, 2009). “…Various biological activities, including insect antifeedant, antimicrobial and antifungal (Kubo et al, 1983;Kubo and Taniguchi, 1988), were ascribed to Warburgia sesquiterpenes but there is no record on their antiprotozoal properties in spite of the extensive use of W. ugandensis in East African ethnomedicine for the treatment of malaria. Only two reports are available for the antiprotozoal potential of the extracts of this species.…”
