A unique feature of molecular iodine by far, is its ability to bind to polymeric materials. A plethora of natural and synthetic polymers develop complexes when treated with molecular iodine, or with a mixture of mole cular iodine and potassium iodide. Many unexpected findings have been encountered upon complexation of iodine and the polymer skeleton, including the color formation, the polymer morphology changes, the compl exation sites or regions, the biological activity, and the electrical conductivity enhancement of the complexes, with poly iodides (I n¯) , mainly I 3¯ and I 5¯, as the actual binding species. Natural polymers that afford such complexes with iodine species are starch (amylose and amylopectin), chitosan, glycogen, silk, wool, albumin, cellulose, xylan, and natural rubber; iodinestarch being the oldest iodinenatural polymer complex. By contrast, numerous synthetic polymers are prone to make com plexes, including poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), nylons, poly(Schiff base)s, poly aniline, unsaturated polyhydrocarbons (carbon nano tubes, fullerenes C 60 /C 70 , polyacetylene; iodinePVA being the oldest iodinesynthetic polymer complex.

IntroductionPolymer composites have received increasing interest due to their unusual combination of stiffness and toughness that are difficult to attain from individual components. For this reason, they have been widely used in areas of transportation, construction, electronics and consumer products. Polymer nanocomposites are defined by the particle size of the dispersed phase characterized by at least one dimension less than 100 nm. [1][2][3] Due to the nanoscale features, nanocomposites possess excellent physical, mechanical and thermal behavior with respect to their conventional microcomposite counterparts.The preparation of synthesizing polymer nanocomposites is the intercalation of monomers or polymers into swellable layer silicate hosts. In most cases, the synthesis involves either intercalation of a suitable monomer and then exfoliating the layered host into their nanoscale elements by subsequent polymerization or by melt-direct polymer intercalation using a conventional polymer extrusion process. [4,5] The high aspect ratio of layered silicate would affect the physical and mechanical properties of the synthesizing polymer nanocomposites.Nylon 6 is a polymer material with low cost and high performance, which has found wide applications in the field of fibers and engineer plastics. There are two crystalline forms in nylon 6, a and c. [6][7][8][9] The a phase consists of fully extended planar zigzag chains, in which adjacent anti-parallel chains are joined by the hydrogen bonds. Therefore, it is the thermodynamically most stable crys-talline form, and can be obtained by slowly cooling from the melt. The c phase is composed of pleated sheets of parallel chains joined by the hydrogen bond. It is less stable and can be obtained by fiber spinning at a high speed or by fast cooling from the melt. [10] The c form can be converted into a by melting followed by recrystallization, by annealing at 160 8C in a saturated-steam atmosphere without any significant loss of orientation and by applying stress at room temperature. [11,12] Using XRD and NMR measurement on heating nylon 6, Murthy et al. [13] first reported the presence of the crystal-crystal transition called Brill transition. The Brill transition in nylon 6,6 has been extensively studied among all nylons. [14][15][16][17] In nylon 6,6, the room temperature triclinic structure transforms into a high temperature pseudohexagonal structure at elevated temperature. The Brill transition in nylon 6,6 is clearly displayed in X-ray diffraction studies, as two intense reflections at 21 8 and 24 8 merge into a single reflection at 21.5 8 during the transition. In nylon 6, a similar phase transformation has also been observed at elevated temperature. The X-ray diffraction studies show two intense reflections, (100) and (010) + (110), at 20.5 8 and 24 8, characteristic of the monoclinic a phase which shifted to 21.5 8 in the monoclinic c phase. ABSTRACT:To examine the possibility of applying the iodination of nylon 6 to forming, a new type of nylon 6 -iodine complex films iodinated before forming (IBF film) and the old type of films iodinated after forming (IAF film) were prepared and their structures were investigated and compared with each other. The IBF films from iodinated nylon 6 powders could be obtained by a melt press at 185°C, which is much lower than the melt-press temperature of pure nylon 6 (250°C). It was ascertained that the structure of IAF films is similar to that reported by Lee et al. but the structure of IBF films is very different. The distinctive features of the IBF films compared with the IAF films are as follows: The IBF films have no excess iodine molecules (I 2 ) to form a complex with nylon 6 chains because those molecules in the iodinated powders have been evaporated through the melt press. The IBF films have a practically amorphous structure but only a few crystalline portions with a relaxed state which may have been created with iodide-ion-free segments of nylon 6 molecules through the procedure of film forming.
