RESUMO -Foi estabelecida a hierarquia de 56 valores transculturais e quatro valores característicos da cultura brasileira com uma amostra de 419 sujeitos, de ambos os sexos, constituída por professores de escola secundária e estudantes universitários. A hierarquia foi estabelecida tanto no plano dos valores individuais como no dos tipos motivacionais de valores. As diferenças entre os subgrupos da amostra foram verifi cadas em termos do nível dos tipos motivacionais e da estrutura bidimensional dos valores. A hierarquia apresentou cinco níveis bem distintos de valores. Do ponto de vista motivacional, os valores de autodeterminação ocuparam o primeiro lugar. As mulheres enfatizaram mais do que os homens os valores a serviço de interesses coletivos e de autotranscendência de seus interesses egoístas em benefício do bem-estar dos outros. Os estudantes universitários salientaram mais do que os professores os valores relativos à autopromoção e à abertura à mudança.Palavras-chave: valores; gênero; valores individuais; tipos motivacionais de valores. Hierarchy of Cross-Cultural and Brazilian ValuesABSTRACT -The hierarchy of 56 cross-cultural values and four characteristic values of the Brazilian culture were established with a sample of 419 subjects, of both sexes, constituted by high school teachers and college students. The hierarchy was established so much in the plan of the individual values as in the one of the motivational values types. The differences among the subgroups of the sample were verifi ed in terms of the level of the motivational types and of the bi-dimensional structure of the values. The hierarchy presented fi ve levels very different from values. From the motivational point of view, the selfdetermination values occupied the fi rst place. The women emphasized the values more than the men to service of collective interests and of self-transcendence of their selfi sh interests in benefi t of the well-being of the other ones. The college students pointed out the relative values more than the teachers to the self-promotion and the opening to the change. RESUMOCompreender as diferenças culturais tornou-se crucial para uma comunicação eficaz com o consumidor uma vez que estudos comprovam que a cultura exerce influência na escolha das pessoas por produtos. Este artigo, por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica na área de valores culturais, busca explicações para o fenômeno do consumo de produtos de moda falsificados. Como resultado, verificou-se que o valor que melhor pode ajudar na explicação deste tipo de consumo é o individualismo/coletivismo vertical, pois tem ênfase no apreço pela hierarquia social. ABSTRACTUnderstanding cultural differences has become crucial for effective communication with consumers as studies have shown that culture influences people's choice for products. This paper, through a bibliographical research in the area of cultural values, seeks explanations for the phenomenon of consumption of counterfeit fashion products. As a result, it was found that the value that may best explain this type of consumption is vertical individualism/collectivism, as it emphasizes the appreciation of the social hierarchy.Keywords: cultural values, counterfeit, individualism-collectivism. a b s t r a c tThe way the people from two culturally very different countries perceive the psychological motives that lead political leaders to launch armed actions against other states was examined. Three types of possible psychological motives, taken from McClelland's (1985) theory of human motivation, were considered: motives associated with the state's power (e.g., increasing the country's economic power), motives associated with other states' political character (e.g., whether neighboring states are relatively peaceful democracies or threatening autocracies), and motives associated with domestic issues (e.g., appearing as a strong leader able to efficiently fight for the security of the country). A total of 442 participants living in Western Europe (France) and 180 participants living in the Maghreb (Algeria) were presented with a Motives of War questionnaire that was created for the present set of studies. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses showed that the hypothesized model of motives holds with the condition that the increasing power motive is divided into two separate motives: one associated with the economy and one associated with the territory. The motives of war tended to be seen as more personal and as more associated with domestic issues among people living in Algeria than among people living in France. Among traditional/ authoritarian people living in France, the motives of war tended to be seen in a more positive light than among liberal people. In contrast, among traditional/authoritarian people living in Algeria, the motives of war tend to be seen in a more negative light than among liberal people.
