Structure of di-μ-chloro-bis[chloro(1-diethylamino-2-diphenylphosphinoethane)cadmium(II)]

Abstract: The overall structure of the two independent dimeric molecules is the same, although there are some minor geometric differences. The N and P atoms from the chelated bidentate ligand along with a terminal CI atom (Clt) and two bridging CI atoms (CIt,, CI~,) form a distorted trigonal-bipyramid environment about each Cd atom. Since both independent molecular dimers are characterized by very asymmetric CI bridges and a long Cd-N bond distance, the Cd environment may be alternately described as a (3 + 2) five-coord… Show more

“…This was confirmed by the structure determination which also showed the molecule to be dimeric with bridging chloride ligands and crystallographically imposed centrosymmetry (Figure ). Overall, the structure is quite similar to that found for [CdCl 2 (Ph 2 PCH 2 CH 2 NEt 2 )] 2 with the coordination about cadmium being a distorted trigonal bipyramid in which Cl(1) and N are the axial ligands (see Table ). The {Cd 2 Cl 2 } moiety here is more nearly equilateral than in the example cited but the nonbonding Cd···Cd distance of 3.834 Å is about the same.…”
