Structure of Cu2B10H10

Abstract: An x-ray diffraction study of the crystal structure of Cu2B10H10 shows that the earlier proposal that the B10H10—2 ion has D4d symmetry is correct, and further establishes the covalent nature of the interactions of CuI with B atoms forming the edges of the polyhedron. There are eight Cu2B10H10 in a unit cell having dimensions a = 10.11, b = 11.36, and c = 14.50, and the space group is Pcab. Bonds within a tetragonal pyramid are 1.73 Å (to apex) and 1.86 Å (along base), while B–B bonds between the tetragonal py… Show more

“…(NH 4 ) 2 [B 10 H 10 ] was purchased from Katchem Ltd, Prague; it was dried under vacuum for 24 hours at 80°C prior to use. 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane, 3-isocyanopropyltriethoxysilane, 3-cyanopropyltriethoxysilane and tetraethylorthosilicate Si(OEt) 4 were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich and used as received. Oxalyl chloride was obtained as 2.0 M solution in CH 2 Cl 2 from Aldrich.…”

“…3 These properties are governed by the 3-dimensional aromaticity and electron deficient nature, which renders the exo-B-H systems susceptible to nucleophilic, electrophilic and radical substitution. 4 Nowadays, literature concerning these clusters has focused on the decaborate reactivity, particularly on the activation of the B-H bond, at apical and equatorial positions. The high stability and low toxicity of the closo-decaborate anion and its derivatives render these clusters excellent candidates for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), 5,6 among several other applications such as extraction, 7 catalysis, 8 materials science 9 and nuclear waste treatment.…”

“…Simple substitution of B~0H~o has been described for a wide range of substituents including -OH, -OR, Knoth, 1968;Muertterties, 1975;Jolly, 1971;Wiberg & Amberger, 1971;Greenwood & Morris, 1974;Greenwood & Thomas, 1973). An X-ray crystallographic study of CUEB~0Hl0 has established the structure of B~0H~o as a bicapped Archimedian square antiprism of D4a symmetry (Dobrott & Lipscomb, 1962 (Zhang, Zhu & Zhu, 1987, unpublished results). This solid was crystallized and then recrystallized from acetone to collect (I) in high purity and in 69% yield.…”
