Structure of Architecture – Tensegrities in the Construction of Architectural Space

Abstract: The problem of space in architecture raises the need to address the questions: what is space ? what is architecture? (…) [1]. Architecture is a part of space, and space is a part of architecture. In some simplification it can be assumed that an architectural object extracts a "quantity" of a larger space, of an infinite whole [1]. Nineteenth-century art historians formulated the definition of architecture, innovative at that time, as being "the art of shaping space" [2]. Architecture constructing an architectu… Show more

“…Because of this structural potential, most of the tensegrity studies have been conducted in the fields of art (50,51), toys, architecture (tents, bridges, etc.) (52)(53)(54)(55), robotics for space application and exploration (56)(57)(58), and biomechanics (59,60). More frequently, tensegrities have been theoretically simulated using metamaterials or mathematically analyzed as a part of a mechanical system (53,(61)(62)(63)(64).…”

“…Recent research has been presented in this sense by Jin and Kanggeun [9]. Polinceusz [10] offers the automatic possibility to use a computer to analyze the shape of tensegrity structures applied to the covering of architectural space.…”
