“…cis ‐Coumaryl anthocyanins are reported to elute at significantly shorter retention times than their trans isomers on reverse‐phase HPLC (Luo et al ., 2007) and to show a slight shift to longer wavelength (2–3 nm) in their UV adsorption at c . 530 nm (Yoshida et al ., 1990; Tatsuzawa et al ., 2008). Such behaviour was shown by the isomeric pairs of anthocyanins in our samples.…”

“…Reports of the presence of cis ‐coumaryl ester substituents in anthocyanins are not common (Yoshida et al ., 1990; Tatsuzawa et al ., 2008) but these compounds have been reported previously in A. thaliana seedlings grown under high‐sucrose, low‐phosphate stress (Luo et al ., 2007). Trans to cis isomerization of anthocyanin coumaryl esters may be effected by sunlight (Yoshida et al ., 1990) and the relatively high light intensities (440 µmol m −2 s −1 ) used in these experiments may have contributed to the observation of these compounds. The cis/trans isomerism of sinapoyl esters in anthocyanins does not seem to have been reported.…”

“…In order to determine the sequence of monosaccharides, a series of 1D NOE experiments may he camed out in a sequential manner by presaturation of each of the proton resonances (Bae et al, 1994;Chen et ( I / . , 1993;Glaljgen et al, 1992;Hamburger et al, 1992;Inose et al, 1991;Kitagawa et al, 1993;Kuang et al, 1991;Lutterbach et ul., 1993;Matsumoto et al, 1994;Mizuno et ul., 1990a, b;Rockenbach et al, 1992;Satoh et al, 1994;Shoyama et al, 1990;Siddiqui et al, 1992;Tsurumi et al, 1992;Yamamoto et al, 1993a.b;Yoshida et al, 1990). However, this strategy can be misleading when NOES, correlated with an anomeric proton, appear at a chemical shift with two or more different hydrogens.…”

“…Pigment 3 was found to be shisonin, which was first isolated from Perilla leaves (Kuroda et al, 1935), and was also reported by Takeda et al (1964). Pigment 2 was also from Perilla leaves and reported by Yoshida et al (1990). Pigments 4 and 6 were first reported by Saito et al (1987).…”
