Structure in the Pion-Proton Total Cross Section between 2 and 7 GeV/c

Abstract: The total cross sections of «•*• on protons in the momentum interval 2 to 7 GeV/c have been measured with high precision. The error fluctuations from point to point vary between 10 and 25 /*b. Two new pionnucleon resonances, one in each of the two isotopic states, have been found at the following mass values: Mi/2=2.65±0.01GeV and My2 = 2.85±0.01 GeV. A search for other resonances at higher momenta is discussed.

“…In order to test the above sum rule (9), the following data were used: the irp total crosssection data tabulated by Barashenkov and Maltsev up to 1.6 GeV/c, 13 the data by the Moyer group 14 between 1.6 and 2.6 GeV/c, and the data by Citron et al between 2.6 and 5.46 GeV/ c. 15 We assumed that the Regge asymptotic behavior is already established at 5.46 GeV (=39.0 in units of pion mass) for the amplitude 626 defined by Eq. (1).…”

“…A description of the transmission method can be found in [105], where the measurement of pion-proton total cross section between 2 and 7 GeV/c laboratory momentum is described. The total cross sections for pp andp p were measured [100] along with that for π p and K p on both hydrogen and deuterium targets.…”
