Structure function analysis and intermittency in the atmospheric boundary layer

Abstract: Abstract. Data from the SABLES98 experimental campaign (Cuxart et al., 2000) have been used in order to study the relationship of the probability distribution of velocity increments (PDFs) to the scale and the degree of stability. “…We have chosen the length of the scaling range (up to 30) in order to have a minimum number of points for the fit and to fulfil the ESS condition. The range extends along the smallest scales, covering the dissipation range and the last part of the inertial range (some characteristic scales as the Kolmogorov and integral scales can be seen in Vindel et al, 2008). A moving average of order 12 has also used for the scaling exponents, similarly to the temperature difference between 50 m and 0.22 m. There is a clear relationship between the values of the scaling exponents and the corresponding situation of stability and it is shown a different behaviour for ζ 2 (p<3) compared to ζ 5 (p>3).…”
