This study, conducted in south-east Benin, aims to provide practical information on the optimal conditions for successful propagation of stem cuttings of Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir. (Fabaceae), a real alternative to its regeneration and domestication. A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different doses of Acid Naphthalene Acetate (ANA) (0; 500; 750; 1000 and 1500 mg/l), the type of substrate (black forest sand and fine sand) and the size of the cuttings used ([1.5-2] and [2.5-3] cm of diameter) on the recovery of these cuttings. To evaluate the effect of different treatments on budding rate, bud burst rate and degenerate cuttings rate, Generalized Linear Mixed Models and Generalized Linear Models of the binomial family with the lme4 and nlme packages were used with the R.3.2.4 statistical software. The results showed that the application of ANA does not significantly improve the cuttings recovery. The probability of budding and budding with 0 mg / l of ANA is similar to that of 500 mg/l, and 750 mg/l of ANA ; doses of 1000 and 1500 mg/l of ANA significantly reduce the probability of budding and bud burst. The diameter of the stems of Pterocarpus erinaceus does not affect the recovery of the cuttings while the substrate has a marginal effect. Levels of degenerate cuttings during the trial do not vary with the treatments.

Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir. (Fabaceae), also called Vène or West African rosewood, is a multipurpose endemic forest species of Sahelo-Sudanian and Sudano-Guinean savannas and forests of West Africa. In Togo, the species is overexploited, which dangerously hinders its survival. The need and emergency of restoring declining stands, using seeds, or propagating material suggests an assessment of its morphological variability. The purpose of this study is to identify the discriminating morphological descriptors, allowing us to describe and also to characterize the species. Five provenances distributed over the whole geographical distribution area in Togo were evaluated for leaf (7 descriptors), fruit (4 descriptors), and seed (4 descriptors) traits. The coefficient of variation (CV) and the principal component analysis (PCA) are used to assess the variability among tree populations. Results show that the discriminating morphological descriptors for P. erinaceus in Togo are the width of the leaf and the terminal leaflet, the length and the width of the fruit, and length and the weight of the seed. These six main relevant variables allow us to discriminate three morphological groups of P. erinaceus population.

The characteristic dominance of Acacia tortilis species in the Sahel plays a major ecological and economic role for its populations. However, in recent years, the high pastoral pressure has compromised the natural regeneration of the species and it becomes therefore important to investigate the effect of substrate and water stress on the growth of A. tortilis plants in nurseries. An experimental design made of 72 seedlings divided into 4 treatments with different proportions of substrate and watering was put in place. During the six months study, 3 seedlings were destroyed every month, and growth parameters were measured. These include the height, diameter at the collar, pivot length and diameter, number and length of lateral roots, number of nodes, number of branches, number of leaves and number of spines. Results show that the height, the collar diameter, the pivot diameter, total number of roots, number of lateral roots, number of branches, number of leaves are significantly different among treatments. The substrate containing 1/4 manure and 3/4 sand + watering twice a day recorded the best growth height (112.1±4.4 cm); number of branches (39.3±24.2); leaf biomass (301.67±97.99 g) and total number of roots (34±1.7) after 6 months of followup. The average root pivot length of Tr4 treatment seedlings (115.5±18.2 cm) is 4 times greater than their average height during the 6-month follow-up. After 3 months in nursery, the substrate containing sand only + watering once a week ensures a good development of the rooting root system to young seedlings, allowing them to better explore soil horizons. Hence, for a reforestation program, the substrate containing sand only + watering once a week is the best suited.
