Structure and Validity of Questionnaire for Oral Frail Screening

Abstract: Oral frailty is defined as the mild decline in oral function and located at the early and reversible stage of frailty. Therefore, early detection and early treatment of oral frailty is very useful. Simple and easy questionnaires, such as an oral frailty checklist, have been widely used for the screening and enlightenment of oral frailty of the Japanese people. We evaluate the structure and validity of the oral frailty checklist. The questionnaire of oral frailty was distributed for the citizens more than 50 ye… Show more

“…The underlying signs also vary from study to study. 1,[14][15][16] According to our knowledge, no method or assessment score exists that could be used both in dental practice and in long-term care facilities for older adults, and that would be beneficial to caretakers of older persons, although points or assessment methods exist at least for research purposes. 14,16 Expecting older adults to reliably carry out complex biting or swallowing tests or to fill out questionnaires is unreasonable, and assigning a diagnosis should be simple and practical for medical staff in the course of daily care.…”

“…Impaired function per se can also affect the structure, composition, size and shape of edible food 13 . In addition to a clinical examination, questionnaires have been developed to screen for oral frailty and OHF 14–16 . No consensus exists on the definition for either OHF or oral frailty 1,7,17,18 …”

“…Structural equation modeling (SEM) analyzes the structure of covariance between such observed variables and compares concepts that cannot be directly observed, such as tongue movement function, to examine the structure of causal relationships. Until now, SEM analysis for the elderly has been dominated by reports on oral-related quality of life and the difference between subjective and objective evaluations related to oral hygiene [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ], and no reports on oral hygiene status and oral function are available to the best of our knowledge. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between tongue hygiene and tongue function using SEM analysis.…”
