“…There was strong seasonality in the isotopic values of OM collected from the Thukela River mouth, with 15N significantly enriched and 13C significantly depleted in the dry season, in comparison with the wet season. Seasonality in riverine isotopic values is common on account of the highly dynamic nature of estuaries (Faye et al 2011), including in tropical and subtropical estuaries where wet and dry seasons are well defined (Olin et al 2012). The relatively depleted OM 13C values in both seasons were likely due to the presence of C3 plant detritus from the Thukela River, where C3 plants grow in 75% of the catchment area (Harrison et al 2001).…”
