Structure and Properties of Piezoelectric Strontium Fresnoite Glass-Ceramics Belonging to the Sr–Ti–Si–Al–K–O System

Abstract: Crystallization of strontium fresnoite Sr 2 TiSi 2 O 8 piezoelectric crystals in Sr-Ti-Si-K-Al-O parent glasses is investigated with the aim of showing the influence of composition and crystallization conditions on the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of the resulting glass-ceramic. All the investigated conditions lead to a surface crystallization mechanism that induces a preferential orientation of crystal growth in the glasses. Near the surface, all the glass-ceramics obtained exhibit (002) planes… Show more

“…that the Ba substitution modifies the T g of the parent glass but not that of the residual glass. This indicates that the surface crystallization rate is probably more influenced by characteristics of the residual glass, as it was highlighted in Reference [ 40 ], than those of the parent glass. Conversely, the clear increase in volume crystallization with the Ba content can be related to the change in the parent glass characteristics.…”

“…Parent glasses were prepared according to the procedure presented in Reference [ 40 ]. Reagent grade SrCO 3 or BaCO 3 (Alfa Aesar, Karlsruhe, Germany, 99.99%), TiO 2 (VWR, Fontenay sous Bois, France, 99.99%), SiO 2 (Sigrano, Maastricht, The Netherlands, 97–99.98%), Al 2 O 3 (Almatis, Ludwigshafen, Germany, +99%) and K 2 CO 3 (VWR, Fontenay sous Bois, France, +99%) were wet-mixed in isopropanol.…”

“…Degree of crystal orientation influences piezoelectric properties for more than just BSTS glass‐ceramics. Sr‐fresnoite (STS), Ba‐fresnoite (BTS), and lithium borosilicate (LBO) glass‐ceramics are systems that demonstrate piezoelectric sensitivity as a function of heat treatment and spherulite size 154,155 . Piezoelectric properties of STS were compared to those of BTS and LBO glass‐ceramics, as well as a BTS single crystal.…”
