Structure and properties of high damping Fe-Ga based alloy

Abstract: Fe-Ga and Fe-Ga-Al alloys are studied by different mechanical spectroscopy techniques, conventional microscopy, DSC and dilatometry. Main contribution to amplitude dependent damping is assigned to magnetomechanical damping, which is very sensitive to structural state of alloys. Both temperature dependent thermally activated relaxation effects and effects due to phase transitions are discussed in terms of alloy structures and their ordering.K e y w o r d s : Fe-Ga, internal friction, damping, ordering

“…The damping capacity of the Fee5.4Ale0.05Ti alloy continuously decreases with an increase in the static strain in the range 2.0e15 Â 10 À4 . These results are in agreement with the results for Fee15Cr, Fee6Al [47,48], FeeGaeAl [49], and Fee15Cre2.5Moe1.0Ni [40] ferromagnetic high damping alloys. The maximum strain amplitude ε max and the maximum damping capacity Q À1 respectively shift to higher and lower values with an increase of the static stress.…”

“…This inconsistency (paradox) was noticed in several above-mentioned and other papers, e.g., [ 127 ]. Only once we observed damping as high as Q h −1 = 0.12 [ 38 ] in Fe–Ga once at forced vibrations. However, since it could not be reproduced later, we must consider this result an artifact possibly caused by inner damage of the sample.…”

“…Damping capacity strongly depends on the measuring method; as a rule of thumb, it is higher if free decay vibrations are used and lower in case of forced vibrations [ 38 ]. Three-point bending tests exhibit higher damping values compared to single cantilever tests due to different stress distribution in the same samples [ 38 ].…”
