A large amount of waste coming out from industries has posed a great challenge in its disposal and effect on the environment. Particularly fly ash, coming out from thermal power plants, which contains aluminosilicate minerals and creates a lot of environmental problems. In recent years, it has been found that geopolymer may give solutions to waste problems and environmental issues. Geopolymer is an inorganic polymer first introduced by Davidovits. Geopolymer concrete can be considered as an innovative and alternative material to traditional Portland cement concrete. Use of fly ash as a raw material minimizes the waste production of thermal power plants and protects the environment. Geopolymer concretes have high early strength and resistant to an aggressive atmosphere. Methods of preparation and characterization of fly ash-based geopolymers have been presented in this paper. The properties of geopolymer cement/mortar/concrete under different conditions have been highlighted. Fire resistance properties and 3D printing technology have also been discussed.

This study summarizes the recent achievements in the development of alternative cement free binder materials (cementless) called alkali activated binder or more popularly known as geopolymers. The history of the development of alkali activated binder and recent terminology are discussed. The influence of the type of the base materials on the properties of goepolymers are thoroughly reviewed. The effect of composition and concentration of alkali and curing temperature on the properties and mechanical behavior of the resulting alkali activated material are discussed. Different type of base materials used in the formation of alkali activated material are blast furnace slag, metakaolin, fly ash, bottom ash, volcanic ashes, and red mud. The state-of-the art in this field demonstrated that this type of materials are ecologically friendly alternative of the Ordinary Portland cement.

Porous alumino-siliceous (PAS) materials are attractive for use in a wide variety of construction and adsorption materials. In the present study, the porous alumino-siliceous materials were synthesized by a geopolymerization method in a reaction from ceramic waste, metakaolin, and an alkaline solution, H 2 O 2 (as a foaming agent) and either pork lard or butter (surfactants). Different amounts of the surfactants (2.5-15 wt%) were added to the samples. The pore shape in the PAS materials was affected by the type of surfactant used. PAS materials with small open pores and high porosity were successfully fabricated with butter as a surfactant. The compressive strength value trend was related to total porosity. The relationship between compressive strength and porosity was found to be consistent with a model proposed by Ryshkewitch. The results suggest that this material can be used as a foam material.
