Structure and properties of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride graft copolymer with higher property

Abstract: In this work, maleic anhydride (MAH) was grafted onto chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) with high chlorine content (66 wt%) via in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization (ISCGC) to obtain the material with improved mechanical strength, softening point, and thermal stability of the material. The structure of the graft product (CPVC-cg-MAH) was characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, GPC, and UV. CPVC-cg-MAH contains less vinylidene chloride (CCl 2 ) units and double bond than corresponding CPVC. Meanwhile, the nu… Show more

“…The measurement result of the cloud point and tolerance showes that the solubility of PM 46 and 88 is lower than others. The acid value and color of the phenolic resins are unrelated to their molecular weight, whereas the softening point is raised with the molecular weight as in the previous study 14 .…”

“…Conversely, grafted MA increases the polarity of the polymer and grafted St increases the rigidity of the polymer, which lead to increase in T g of PVC. These two contradictory effects compensate each other and determine the final thermal performance of PVC‐g‐(St‐MA) sample . The cross‐linking reactions increase the rigidity and the new introduced sections can affect T g at different manners, depending on their structures.…”

“…Maleic anhydride (MA) can contribute in many chemical reactions due to the presence of the double bonds and strong polar anhydride groups. Thus, it has been used as a general functional grafted monomer to modify polyolefines . The melt grafting reactions of MA with polyethylene, polypropylene, and polybutylene have been studied .…”
