Structure and processability of iodinated poly(vinyl alcohol). II. Drawability of iodinated films

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The drawability of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films iodinated with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mol/L I 2 /KI aqueous solutions was examined with a tensile tester and a hand-operated drawer at 30 -150°C. The structure of the films drawn to a maximum draw ratio (MDR) and deiodinated was determined by X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and birefringence. Generally, the improvement of the drawability for the PVA film via iodination was ascertained by the increased breaking strain and … Show more

“…Figure 1 shows the stress–strain curves of the IBC films at 30–60°C. Generally, the breaking stress was much lower than that of the untreated PVA films as in the previous article,9 whose yield stress and breaking strain at 30°C were 0.16 GPa and 130%, respectively. The maximum draw ratio increased with the weight gain of I 2 /KI up to 83.2% and then decreased.…”

“…Especially, the films contained 117.0 wt % I 2 /KI and, in an almost amorphous state, crystallinity was advanced. The study of the X‐ray peaks was discussed as in the previous article 7–9…”

“…Shin et al [168][169][170][171] and Woo et al [172] embarked on the study of the structure and processability of iodina tion products of oriented and unoriented PVA using I 2 /KI solution at room temperature for 24 h. The crystallinity of oriented and unoriented PVA subjected to iodination was 21.3% and 37.0%, respectively. The weight gains and molar ratios of the unoriented and oriented films increased rapidly with I 2 /KI concentration to 1.0 mol/l and 0.5 mol/l, respectively.…”

“…(a) 5mm/sec (a) 0.5mm/sec The birefringence which arises in the PVA film is proportional to the stretching ratio on film stretching [4]. Then, the increase in the birefringence for the change of the stretching ratio was examined.…”
