The drawability of iodinated at solution before casting (IBC) polyvinyl alcohol films prepared by casting aqueous solutions of 10 wt % PVA containing 15.2, 39.8, 83.2, 117.0, and 140.1% was examined with a tensile tester at 20-608C. The tensile behavior of IBC films showed that the yield and breaking loads were much lower, and the breaking elongation was even higher than those of the unoriented iodinated after casting (IAC) films as well as the untreated PVA films. The maximum draw ratios of the films with the weight gain of 15.2, 39.8, 83.2, 117, and 140.1% were 4.5, 5.5, 8.5, 8.0, and 7.5, respectively, which were achieved at 208C in all. The crystallinity of all films increased by the maximum draw, regardless of crystallinity before drawing. The crystalline structure was recovered to the original PVA crystalline lattice by deiodination. Amorphous orientation and initial moduli increased with the maximum draw ratio, while the orientation of crystals was constant. The orientation and moduli increased up to the weight gain of 83.2%, whose highest draw ratio and initial modulus were 8.5 and of 7.1 GPa, respectively, and then decreased.

A unique feature of molecular iodine by far, is its ability to bind to polymeric materials. A plethora of natural and synthetic polymers develop complexes when treated with molecular iodine, or with a mixture of mole cular iodine and potassium iodide. Many unexpected findings have been encountered upon complexation of iodine and the polymer skeleton, including the color formation, the polymer morphology changes, the compl exation sites or regions, the biological activity, and the electrical conductivity enhancement of the complexes, with poly iodides (I n¯) , mainly I 3¯ and I 5¯, as the actual binding species. Natural polymers that afford such complexes with iodine species are starch (amylose and amylopectin), chitosan, glycogen, silk, wool, albumin, cellulose, xylan, and natural rubber; iodinestarch being the oldest iodinenatural polymer complex. By contrast, numerous synthetic polymers are prone to make com plexes, including poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), nylons, poly(Schiff base)s, poly aniline, unsaturated polyhydrocarbons (carbon nano tubes, fullerenes C 60 /C 70 , polyacetylene; iodinePVA being the oldest iodinesynthetic polymer complex.

Abstract. According to development of optical engineering, the measurement accuracy of optical components and materials has become more important. For example, birefringence in polymer thin film is an essential issue for development of liquid crystal display. In this study, after a PVA (poly vinyl alcohol) film was embedded by photopolymer and cut by ultramicrotome, a cross-sectional birefringence distribution of cut film was observed by birefringence contrast scanning near-field optical microscopy (B-SNOM). As a result, three dimensional birefringence ratios were calculated and birefringence of parallel to stretching direction was larger than that of vertical one. This result shows that cross-sectional birefringence distribution is yielded by inhomogeneous distribution of molecular alignment in film material according to asymmetry stretching.
