Structure and ordering of solid solutions of iron in palladium

Abstract: Ordering of FePd alloys with compositions 75 to 95 at% Pd is studied by X‐ray diffraction of multicrystalline samples in the temperature region up to 800 °C. The lattice parameter is also measured. The critical temperature for LRO in the 75 at% sample is found to be Tc = (640 ± 10) °C. No LRO is found at any other composition, but the possibility of local order in the 80at% sample exists on the basis of deviations observed in the diffuse scattering. The results support a first order reaction for LRO in the 75… Show more

“…One ªnaturalº choice is the iron/palladium system, where alloys are known with average valence electron concentrations of 8.5 (Fe 3 Pd), 9.0 (FePd), and 9.5 (FePd 3 ) electrons per metal atom. Fortunately, all of these phases adopt fcc-like structures, with Fe 3 Pd [80] and FePd 3 [81] crystallizing in the AuCu 3 structure type ( Figure 28) and FePd [82] in the AuCu structure type (Figure 31). Conflicting claims of substitutional disorder further complicate the structural chemistry of these alloys.…”

“…Similar calculations were done using Eq. (3) with data for the Pd 3 Fe solid solution (a alloy ¼ 3.852 A) [48], and the amount of alloyed Fe was found to be around 11 8.5, 17, and 23 at.%, respectively. In summary, the shift toward higher 2q values with respect to the Pd/C catalyst prepared with a reflux time of 30 min, reveals that, in all cases, the second metal was, to some extent, incorporated into the Pd lattice.…”
