Structure and hemodynamics of microvascular networks: heterogeneity and correlations

Abstract: The objective of this study was to quantify the heterogeneity of topological, morphological, and hemodynamic parameters in microvascular networks and to identify functionally relevant correlations among these parameters. Seven networks in the rat mesentery (383-913 vessel segments per network) were examined, and measurements were made of segment generation, diameter, length, and hematocrit in all segments (n = 3,129) and of flow velocity (only in 3 networks, 1,321 segments). In addition, hematocrit, flow rate,… Show more

“…Second, we also found that topological organization strongly determined the blood pressure distribution as found previously in the rat mesentery (Pries et al, 1995). The pressure drops by 40% between its pial value and the capillary one.…”

“…We investigated both the spatial and the topological distribution of the blood pressure inside the cortex, as these considerations have been previously found to be of importance in mesentery networks (Pries et al, 1995(Pries et al, , 1996. First, we found that the blood perfusion very rapidly became uniform inside the gray matter depth, where various cellular layers are present.…”

“…A pressure-driven pump system with a flow controller (Fluigent, Villejuif, France) was used to pump each solution through the microfluidic device at a physiologically relevant average velocity of 1 mm/s (44)(45)(46)(47). This velocity corresponds to a volumetric flow rate of 0.24 mL/min and an apparent wall shear rate of 61 s À1 for our channel dimensions.…”
