Cellulose acetate (CA) films with sweet fennel essential oil (FEO) were evaluated for possible changes caused by the incorporation of 5, 10, 20 and 30% glycerol. The results show that the incorporation of different concentrations of plasticizer caused an increase in thickness, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), tensile strength (TS), besides altering the optical properties and demonstrating possible chemical interaction with the CA matrix (Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the addition of glycerol caused morphological changes on the surface and internal region of all films. As for antimicrobial activity, the FEO was effective for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . However, all films evaluated did not show activity in inhibiting these microorganisms. Therefore, it is believed that the FEO may have some incompatibility with the CA matrix, being trapped between the polymer chains. Therefore, the results suggest that the incorporation of glycerol caused changes in the functional properties of all films, although it did not result in measurable antimicrobial effects.

In this study, propolis extract (PE) was first encapsulated in different liposomal formulations (65–370 nm) with high encapsulation efficiency (68%–93%). The liposomal PE was further embedded in a food‐grade gelatin‐zein core/shell fiber by using the co‐axial electrospinning method. Transmission electron and confocal laser scanning microscopy verified the structure of liposomes and their homogeneous dispersion in fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed the smooth morphologies of core/shell liposomal fibers. The loading of PE in liposomal fibers improved both thermal (differential scanning calorimetry) and textural (elongation at break and tensile strength) properties, and the fibers loaded with more PE provided higher mucoadhesiveness. The PE‐loaded fiber showed higher antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The incorporation of liposomal PE in fiber enhanced the viability of human skin fibroblast (HFF‐1) cells. The adhesion of HFF‐1 cells on fiber was demonstrated by SEM, thus PE‐loaded liposomal fiber could provide an efficient platform for cell growth. The findings of this study proposed that propolis‐loaded liposomal hybrid fibers produced by the co‐axial method can be used as a potential wound healing material.

Biodegradable plastics are gaining popularity as environmentally friendly functional materials. This study focuses on the preparation of aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) reinforced cellulose acetate composite films using a cost‐effective approach. The process involves synthesizing bamboo‐derived cellulose acetate (BDCA), dissolving it in tetrahydrofuran with glycerol as a plasticizer, and incorporating Al(OH)3 particles into the casting solution to reinforce the cellulose acetate film. Analyses on microstructure and characteristics of the films were conducted through various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction (XRD), water contact angle measurement, and tensile testing. The results indicate that the Al(OH)3 particles were well‐dispersed in the composite films, leading to a strong interaction with the cellulose acetate matrix. As a result, the prepared composite films exhibited significantly higher tensile strength compared to pure bamboo‐derived cellulose film. Additionally, they demonstrated improved anti‐ultraviolet properties and a lower water vapor transmission rate, despite being more hydrophilic. This method holds significant potential for commercial applications in producing high‐performance cellulose acetate‐based composite films.Highlights Bamboo‐derived cellulose acetate was synthesized through chemical processes. BDCA based composite film reinforced with Al(OH)3 was prepared by casting method. The Al(OH)3 significantly enhance the functional properties of the composite film. Composite films showed good performances for packaging according to the results.
