Structure and Functional Expression of a Member of the Low Voltage-Activated Calcium Channel Family

Abstract: Oscillatory firing patterns are an intrinsic property of some neurons and have an important function in information processing. In some cells, low voltage-activated calcium channels have been proposed to underlie a depolarizing potential that regulates bursting. The sequence of a rat brain calcium channel alpha 1 subunit (rbE-II) was deduced. Although it is structurally related to high voltage-activated calcium channels, the rbE-II channel transiently activated at negative membrane potentials, required a stron… Show more

“…The only cloned member of the low-threshold Ca 2+ channels is the rat brain ctlE subunit [34]. This channel shows transient kinetics when expressed in Xenopus oocytes, and is sensitive to external Ni 2+ (ICs0 = 28 gM).…”

“…This class contains several types of calcium channels: N-type, 12,16,42,45 Q-type 39 or R-type. 11,38 To what extent each of the candidates is present could not be determined on the basis of voltage-dependent and kinetic properties alone.…”

“…Both domains determine the attachment of the fl subunit to the c~ 1 channel. This linkage is required for the observed 13 subunit regulation of the current properties of the C~l subunit, that is the increase in current amplitude [6][7][8][9][10] and the modifications in kinetics and voltage dependence of the channel [11][12][13][14].…”
