Structure and evolution of the Horse Heaven Hills in south-central Washington

Abstract: Data from this study suggest that tectonic models which directly or indirectly pertain to the origin of the Horse Heaven Hills uplift might be constrained by: (1) the predominance of monoclinal or nearmonoclinal fold geometries and reverse faults along both the northwest and northeast trends; (2) preliminary data which suggest clockwise rotation has occurred along folds of both trends; {3) folds along both trends were developing simultaneously and at similar rates (at least during Wanapum and Saddle Mountains … Show more

“…The steep limb of the asymmetrical anticlines is almost always faulted (Figure 3.3). Where exposed, these frontal fault zones have been found to be imbricated thrusts, as, for example, at Rattlesnake Mountain, Umtanum Ridge near Priest Rapids Dam (Bentley 1977;Goff 1981), the Horse Heaven Hills (Hagood 1986), and the Saddle Mountains near Sentinel Gap (Reidel 1984).…”

“…Similar geometry and structure of folds within the YFB (e.g., Hagood 1986;) suggest similarity in the tectonic stress and response of these structures, suggesting contemporaneous (over a period of millions of years) development of the entire fold belt. Geomatrix (1996, p. 3-10) considers the fold geometry and structural data for the Umtanum anticline to be representative of the style and amount of compressive deformation in the YFB.…”
