Structure and ecology of epiphyte communities of a cloud forest in central Veracruz, Mexico

Abstract: Abstract. 39 species of vascular epiphytes were found in a 625‐m2 plot in a cloud forest in Veracruz, Mexico. Epiphyte biomass was estimated for all species in six zones distinguished on each tree > 10 cm in DBH: stem base, lower stem, upper stem, branches > 20 cm, branches from 5 — 20 cm and branches < 5 cm diameter. Branches were additionally separated according to their position in the upper, middle or lower canopy. Total dry matter of green organs was 318 kg/ha. Dominance/diversity curves fitted best to t… Show more

“…It has been well established that, within the canopy, many epiphyte species have preferences in vertical canopy distribution (Bøgh, 1992;Freiberg, 1996;Hietz and Hietz-Seifert, 1995b;Ingram and Nadkarni, 1993;Johansson, 1978;Pupulin et al, 1995;Rudolph et al, 1998;ter Steege and Cornelissen, 1989). However, what environmental habitat factors determine these distributions is less well known.…”

“…These methods permitted the collection of data and plant material from the entire tree without The host tree was divided into canopy zones (Figure 6), following the widely used classification system of Johansson (1974). This scheme has been widely used and recommended by epiphyte researchers (Bøgh, 1992;Freiberg, 1996Freiberg, , 1999Gradstein et al, 1996;Gradstein et al, 2003;Hietz and Hietz-Seifert, 1995b;Nieder and Zotz, 1998). In the present study, Zone 1 was not considered for two reasons.…”

“…Waechter (1992) utilizou a divisão em intervalos de três metros de altura cada para verificar a distribuição de todas as espécies de epífitos vasculares em Torres e no Taim (RS). Tanto a divisão das árvores em zonas como em intervalos regulares de altura têm sido aplicadas por diversos autores (Bøgh 1992;Zimmerman & Olmsted 1992;Hietz & Hietz-Seifert 1995b;Freiberg 1996;Mursidawati et al 1999;Kersten & Silva 2001).…”

“…Bryophyte mats supposedly play an important role for the distribution of vascular epiphytes on potential host trees: they hold water, trap seeds, provide anchorage for seedlings, and intercept nitrate from fog (Clark et al 1998, Johansson 1974. Although these and other authors (Bennett 1987, Freiberg 1999, Hietz & Hietz-Seifert 1995b reiterate the importance of mosses and liverworts for vascular epiphytes, documentation of cause and effect is rare (Laman 1995).…”
